The racetrack now known as Ellis Park was built in 1922 by the Green River Jockey Club. Financial woes plagued the new racetrack in its early days, in 1925 the racetrack continued operations after James C. Ellis purchased the track
Located in Henderson, Ky., Ellis park offers thoroughbred racing and whole card simulcasting and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN). Home of the Grade III Gardenia Stakes on "Big Four Stakes Saturday," Ellis Park conducts its live race meet from mid-July through Labor Day.
It has two racetracks:
Main Track: One and one-eighth Miles, oval.
Inner Turf Course: One Mile, oval.
