Tampa Downs

Tampa Bay Downs is famous as the only thoroughbred race track on Florida's west coast and features live racing including the Florida Oaks and the Tampa Bay Derby. The track is open year-round for simulcast wagering.

The track opened in 1926 under the name of Tampa Downs. The first season lasted 39 days and was headed by Ohio investor Harvey Mayers and Kentucky Colonel Matt J. Winn, famed promoter of the Kentucky Derby. The opening event forced Hialeah to improve purses in order to compete in the battle for horses with Tampa Downs.

Tampa Bay has two tracks:

Main Track: One Mile, oval.

Turf Course: Seven furlongs with 1/4 mile chute.

Racing Dates:

January - May

The month of December

Tuesdays and Thursdays through Sunday

No Friday racing in April and May

Post Times: 12:25 p.m.

Tampa Bay by the numbers:

Main Track: One mile dirt oval, with a 3/8's and 7/8's mile chutes

Turf Course: 7/8's mile in circumference, with a 1/4 mile chute
